Do you want to summit Mount Hood, but feel like you don’t quite have the skills to do so? Spend a day on the mountain with us first, developing your mountaineering skills and strengthening your ability to join a competent team. Learn to identify the hazards on the mountain and how to best keep yourself safe. Gain confidence on how to climb the south side of Mt. Hood.

This day on Mount Hood is focused on skills and training to help you become a competent and safe climber. It is not a summit climb.

New in 2025! Kaf Adventures has brand new Petzl gear available to rent for Mt. Hood Summit Climbs:
Crampons - $25 per day
Ice Axe - $15 per day
Helmet - $15 per day
Glacier harness - $25 per day, 2 locking carabiners included
Full package - $70 per day
Online reservation coming soon, but for now let us know what you need. Quantities are limited, so sooner is better, with a deadline of 48 hours before your climb. We will have the equipment ready for you at the mountain on the day of the climb.

We do not rent mountaineering boots, so if you need those we recommend getting both boots and crampons from The Mountain Shop or Next Adventure, both in Portland. Please see our Rental Equipment page for more information.

Meet your instructor at 8am at the Timberline Lodge parking lot.

In the morning, we will provide an introduction to crampon and ice axe techniques and give you plenty of opportunity to practice. As you get comfortable, we'll add in some basic knots and rope handling.

After a lunch break, we'll focus on self-arrest, ensuring we can stop ourselves in case of a fall before moving on to additional practice on steeper slopes.

We'll end the day by introducing the concept of anchors and going over what to expect on the day of your summit climb. You can expect to be back to the parking lot around 4pm.

  • Any backcountry or mountaineering experience will enhance your ability to learn, but is not required.
  • Ability to hike in for 6 hours and ascend 2000' with a 30 lb pack.
  • Upon registration, you will receive a confirmation email full of important information - make sure to read it thoroughly!
  • 3-5 days before your course you will receive an email from your guide containing even more details, including the exact meetup location and time.

  • Please arrive on time and ready to go at your pre-arranged meeting location. To get the most of our day, we'd like to begin right at the designated start time.
  • All along the way, our office team is available via email or phone to answer any questions you may have.
